Buying credits from Gulf-based standards: a buyer's guide

Most registry guidance is written for project owners. This guide sets out what a buyer should check before buying, spot or long-term, including from projects registered with the Global Carbon Council (GCC), a Qatar-based carbon standard.

1. Find the project on the registry.

Check that the project is listed, what status it has and which credits have been issued. The registry record is the starting point for every other check.

2. Confirm who can sell.

The project owner and the seller may be different companies. Ask who holds the credits, who has the right to sell them, and whether any have already been promised to another buyer.

3. Check what you can claim.

Removal or reduction, any labels the standard has given the credits, and whether the host country has authorised them. Check which body gave each label, on the registry or in writing.

4. Agree the contract terms.

Delivery dates, payment timing, what happens if delivery is late, and how credits are transferred or retired in your name. Our FAQ covers what to check.

5. Keep the records.

Registry transfer and retirement records support every public statement you make.

How we help. Tell us what you need: the credit type, vintage, rough volume and timing, spot or long-term. We advise you on what to check, help you check the registry information, and introduce you to suitable sellers. Buyer and seller contract directly with each other.
